Birthstones are seen as a modern traditional gift – the currently accepted list of stones was defined as recently as 1912 by the “Jewellers of America”.
The history of birthstones originated in the old testament of the Bible, from a breastplate worn by Aaron (brother of Moses). The breastplate was decorated with twelve gemstones, representing the twelve tribes of Israel. It wasn’t until the 5th century that a scholar linked the stones with the twelve signs of the zodiac, and declared that each stone would have beneficial effects for anyone born under the time of each particular stone.
The “Jewellers of America” revised the list of stones, and aligned each stone with a calendar month.
