We are a gift and home accessory shop based in the heart of Nuneaton town centre, Warwickshire, within the Ropewalk Shopping Centre . We have a large customer base which ranges in age from children looking to start their Harry potter collection to grandparents looking for gifts for their families.
Catering for all budgets, we stock ranges starting from just 99p.
We also try to cover as many different tastes as possible within the small space available, including gothic style skulls to Disney Princesses.
What our customers say
Joco was founded in April 2015 by me, Jo Williams.
I had to think of a unique name for the business and so I played around with mine and my kids’ names until I came up with something that I thought was suitable. Using my name Jo and my sons Cameron and Oliver’s initials, I came up with Joco. I felt that the shop name had to be something short and sharp that would be easy to remember.
Initially I sold more home accessories and so added Interiors so that people understood what I sold. As time went on, the products changed and I began to sell more giftware than home accessories, therefore in 2018 I decided to introduce the name gifts to the website instead of interiors, as it was misleading people who hadn’t visited my shop as to what I sell.
The shop was my dream for many years and I eventually took the plunge to open in 2015 with very little money on the outskirts of Nuneaton town centre. After 2 years of extremely hard work and suffering sales, I had to make a decision as to whether I closed or I took a risk and moved to the town centre with the increased rates and a service charge due to the most suitable shop being inside a shopping centre.
I took the plunge with a lot of nerve, as I didn’t know whether it would be a good move or not. Footfall has increased massively in comparison, equally overheads have too however being in business I know that there are sacrifices to be made in order to get a foot in the door, so to speak. Retail is having a tough time at the moment (2018) and so you have to think outside the box, something I am good at.
In June 2019, Joco moved again – Yes I’m the crazy lady behind these ideas but there is method in my madness. The shop is now based within the Ropewalk Shopping Centre, Nuneaton and has seen a significant rise in footfall.
The high street is suffering at the moment, however Nuneaton is looking for funding to increase its offering across various sectors including residential, educational and social needs. This will bring more people to the town and therefore the retail offering will continue to sustainable, albeit difficult at the moment (2019).
My shop is well known locally and I want this to continue to grown outside of the area. We have a great social media following and we use various avenues to advertise the business.
Having won some awards already, we have continue to receive nominations to further awards. This year (2019) we have been finalists in FSB Area Finals and The Woman Who Achieves Awards. This November we are shortlisted in Britains Best Small Shop and the Coventry Telegraph Business Awards as Retailer of the Year. I will of course keep you updated.
I no longer work alone and I have a great team working here at Joco. See below as their photos and stories start to appear.
